Cookies

Our website uses a set of so-called cookies, as is the case with almost all websites available online. Cookies are small text files that websites visited by the user (but also other websites or webservers) send and record on the user’s computer (or mobile device) to then be retransmitted to the same websites (or webservers) the next time the same user visits them, thereby submitting such information.

Cookies have become essential tools in that they allow modern websites to function optimally, allowing for maximum customization, interaction and fluidity when it comes to the user’s website browsing experience. But they can also be used to track user browsing preferences and then post ads that are tailored to those preferences.

Cookies may be:

  • session-related (if they expire when a user quits the browser) or persistent (remaining until after a set term, which may even be several years long);
  • first-party or third-party (in the latter case, they are configured by a website or webserver other than the one that the user is visiting at that time);
  • technical (required and sometimes indispensable in order to provide a full – or better – browsing experience) or profiling-related (aimed at creating a user profile to then send them ads tailored to the preferences they expressed when previously visiting the website).

The Data Protection Authority classifies session, functional and (only under certain circumstances) analytics cookies as technical cookies. More specifically, the Data Protection Authority, by resolution dated 8 May 2014, has stated that analytics cookies can be likened to technical cookies only if they are used to optimise the website browsing experience directly by the Data Controller, who can collect information in aggregate form about the number of users and how they visit the website.

For more information about the types of cookies, their features and how they work, you can visit: http://www.allaboutcookies.org, www.youronlinechoices.com, http://cookiepedia.co.uk and refer to the relevant Resolution of the Data Protection Authority.
